Yummy butter!!

So after much discussion in the Honduras Living Group and Patty passing on this suggestion to us, we made butter today!! THANKS Patty!!
It was great. Since we already drink raw milk and have the cream on the top, we didn't have to use heavy cream. We just got the cream off the top of our milk, put it in a mason jar and SHOOK...and shook and shook and shook. After about 15 min of shaking perhaps it was kind of 'sludgy' and we added a dash of salt, sealed it back up and shook...and shook and shook and shook. What a work out! but now we have our own little bit of freshly made butter!! WHOO HOO!! We had fun and thought it was so cool to watch the different stages! We'll make more next time and we want to try cheeses too. That's my neighbor's precious little one in the background enjoying the fun!

We made some butter too - all due to the HL group too. We put a bit of splenda and a bit of salt in ours. YUM YUM YUM.

oohh...I read you could add sugar, but I wasn't sure about it. I'll have to try Splenda next time. My 8yr old wants to try garlic salt next time since she LOVES garlic! So we might end up with a fridge full of flavored butters...ha ha!
Glad you guys liked yours too! Now I need a yogurt maker so I can be as good as La Gringa! Ha ha!

LOL. We also made one with splenda and cocoa powder. It made it to thick though. I dont know if we put to much cocoa powder in it or what, but it took forever, and it just didn't work right. We also made one with chili (with lime) powder, and that was good too.

Hi,
I found your blog through elizabeth s...who I found from somewhere else...anyway you have a beautiful family and I enjoyed reading about your homeschooling. I started homeschooling this year and it has gone ok so far...good days bad days. It is encouraging to see the different faces of homeschooling.
In His Grace,
Mari

Jennifer, LOL too funny, well I will know not to try cocoa for sure!! I'm thinking fresh honey butter will be yummy!

Mari, I agree. I'm always encouraged by reading other's homeschool experiences. It's certainly not the easiest thing, but it's rewards are great. At least thus far...we've only been in it since Jan. But so far, we are loving it!!

You don't need a yogurt maker. Take 4 cups milk and scald it to 180 over a medium heat. Hold it at 180 for 2 minutes. Allow to cool to about 105-110. Stir in about 3 Tbls plain yogurt and pour it in quart jars. Put your heating pad on low, place the jars on the heating pad, cover it all up with two towels folded in half, and leave it alone for about 4-5 hours. (check it after about 3-1/2 hrs. Remember it will continue to thicken some after you refrigerate it.) The longer you leave it, the more tart it will be.

If the kids would prefer it a little sweeter, put about 1/4 cup sugar and a tsp of vanilla flavoring in the milk after it cools, before you put it to incubate. When it is ready, put it in the fridge to cool completely.

I have been putting a little preserves in mine, or fresh fruit. If the kids like it, then invest in a yogurt maker if you want to. It has become my favorite snack.
